Week 6 Sept 30 - Oct 4

Cont. Design on Tiny Home. Begin building models of the trailer.

Monday:  Layed out the floor plan to our tiny home in the classroom.....Will this be the final layout?
The layout below has a 3' x 8' bathroom at the top of the photo. The center area would be the kitchen and the bottom of the photo area the living room.

Alt.  Placing the kitchen at the lowest area of the photo. The kitchen would be 8' long.

Tuesday: Tuesday was to be the construction start date of the trailer. Discovered one problem in the layout of the trailer. The metal undersupport framing where the plywood pieces but together was slightly off. Causing a delay. Leveled the trailer.

Wednesday: On Wednesday the classes made the necessary adjustment to the undercarriage to support the edge of the plywood and seal the area next to the wheel wells. The classes also began cutting the insulation and placed it between the metal studs.

Framing in around the wheel wells.

Thursday:  Added sheet metal above the wheel wells and finished the installation of the insulation. We will do the sealing of the undercarriage later in the project.

Friday Design Review

Students were given an 8 x 11 sheet of squared paper to begin the design of a tiny home. We concentrated on the size and design for the bathroom.

Construction Class

In addition to the above work, the construction class is involved with the design for a new tiny home.

Possible Toilets for Tiny Home

Natures Head

Subfloor Insulation

Insulating the undercarriage of the trailer.

With the design of the trailer, it appears that one efficient way to insulate between the existing metal joist would be with rigid insulation panels.

Some conversations on the subject. Green Building Advisor.

Possible covering under the trailer in lieu of sheet metal for the undercarriage.  We do not want critters crawling into the underbelly of our home!

Q1 Weel 4 Sept 16-20

Week 4

The classroom has been set up with a full-size floor plan of the tiny home. (8' x 16')

Trailer:  So some things I have learned about the trailer purchased for the project. First, the flatbed style purchased will allow for a full 8'6" wide home, but the compromise is that we will lose some height within the home. According to the DOT maximum trailerable height is 13' 6". Having the flatbed above the wheel wells gives us a floor beginning at 32" above the asphalt, providing a max roof height of 10'9", I was hoping for 12'.

Q1 Week 3

This week we will be helping the garden/farming class. The garden/farming class is catching up in the garden by weeding three months' worth of weeds. On Sunday night we had a predator attack one of our new roosters and killed it. The rooster was in what we call the bachelor pad with another new rooster. The preditor appears to have gotten into the cage through an opening between the door and cage top.

The class also worked on installing a larger sink in the garden kitchen, installed a new wood pallet compost bin, removed two sections of seating around the tree, installed a new wood pallet door to the farm, and started work on placing roosting 2 x 4's on the existing 8 bin hen boxes.

The class also began researching bathroom sizes for tiny homes... The class looked at RV restrooms and tiny home restrooms online.

Q1 Week 2

The first part of the construction course will review measurement and scale. The class will review the customary and metric systems of measurement. The class will then use tape measures to measure things. From there the class will take the measurements and draw a plan view of the room that they measured......

School is back in Session!

For the 2019/2020 school year, I am dedicated two of my classes towards construction. The two classes will work in conjunction with the tiny house.  Here we go!
